The instrumental music department at Westlake High School has a long tradition of musical excellence. In addition to receiving “Superior” ratings on the state level at OMEA Adjudicated Events, the Westlake High School instrumental ensembles travel extensively and have appeared in music festivals in New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Williamsburg, Montreal and Orlando. The Westlake High School Marching Band has appeared in the “Hollywood Parade of the Stars,” the Orange and Citrus Bowls, and the Chicago Thanksgiving Day Parade. The majority of the students in the instrumental program study privately and a large percentage of them participate in the OMEA Solo & Ensemble Adjudicated Event.

Westlake High School hosted the OMEA District IV Large Group Adjudicated Event from 2006 to 2009 in their state of the art Performing Arts Center. Westlake High School was also the Northeast Region site for the State Band Adjudicated event in May of 2011.

Course Offerings in the instrumental music program at Westlake High School include: marching band, symphonic wind ensemble, concert band, string orchestra, jazz ensemble #1, music theory and music history. Jazz Ensemble #2 is a voluntary group that rehearses twice a week after school.

The string orchestra consists of all string players at Westlake High School who are involved in the instrumental music program. Several of the students participate in additional ensembles outside of the high school music program.

The symphonic wind ensemble is made up of the top performers in the entire band program at Westlake High School. The students in the marching band audition near the end of marching season and are placed in one of two concert bands. Several students also participate in other Cleveland area instrumental ensembles.
